Horseback Ride to La Fortuna Waterfall and Indigenous Village-Enjoy Costa Rica with a twist

Horseback riding in Costa Rica is a good way to explore, discover and admire the scenic beauty. The exotic views make Monteverde horseback riding all the more special.

Horseback riding in Monteverde is undoubtedly one of the favorite activities of tourists. The ideal way to admire the wilderness in Monteverde is by riding a horse up to La Fortuna Waterfall. On the way there you can spot Toucans, bellbirds, parrots, sloths, monkeys and even catch a glimpse of Gulf of Nicoya through the clouds if you are lucky.

The horses are sturdy, trained and very friendly towards tourists. The ride up to the fall and replica Indigenous Village is a slow and steady one that will approximately take an hour. This makes it ideal for families, first-time riders and people who want to take their time to enjoy the view. On the way there, you can view the Arenal volcano and dormant Cerro Chato Volcano in the distance as well as the beautiful misty countryside.

Once at the entrance to the waterfall, you park your horse at a rustic ranch and proceed to La Fortuna with your guide on foot. The trail to La Fortuna is an approximately 300-step hike over slippery rocks but the trek is worth it.

The hike is not recommended for people who are older and/or have a history of joint, hip and back problems as the slippery rocks can be dangerous. If you are unable to hike all the way to the waterfall, you can still enjoy the view of Dos Pino’s waterfall from where you park your horses.

Once at La Fortuna, you can take pictures or even swim around in the cool waters if the conditions are suitable. On the way back, you hike back and take a staircase to the same rustic ranch where your horses are ready to take you back to your starting point.
